Nothing New Under the Sun, Only Repackaged

I lifted this article directly from Metropolis Magazine.  In one of my earlier designs I created, it had a simular feel with the ceiling treatments.  This tells me that there is nothing new under the sun, only a difference in packaging.

In January 2009, the HBC Olympic Store located in Vancouver, BC, received a 1st Place Award at the Retail Design Institute 38th Annual International Store Design Awards. These prestigious awards honor the best in retail design. The HBC project won in the category of New Shop within an Existing Department or Specialty Store. This project also won IFAI’s Award of Excellence in October 2008 for Interior Display.

The Feature Elements built by Eventscape are a 70 foot long by 15 feet high curved wall with 3 polished steel archways that creates a dynamic backdrop to the Olympic clothing and accessories. The graphic images of winter sports are an impressive promotion for the upcoming Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010. The dramatic 15-foot high column tree with curved framed fabric “branches” spans over 60 feet and incorporates the Olympic colors. The unique “pod” change rooms have a sliding door which, when closed, display the words “occupied” in 12 different languages.

This specialty area within the Hudson Bay Company department stores showcases the Olympic clothing and accessories for the Canadian teams. HBC is one of the premier sponsors of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. The elements incorporate the official colors of the Olympic committee and the dramatic scale of the structures draw customers to the area.

The challenge on this project was to make a massive structure - the S-Wall - appear light and “floating”. To achieve this they engineered the three arches to provide the main support to the wall, using steel re-enforcement. With a decorative element providing support, light aluminum framing formed the rest of structure. The client also wanted the elements to be modular and re-usable, so each segment has hang points for suspension. The custom millwork base incorporates glass, colored acrylic and concealed lighting that spotlights the garments hanging above the project.

Eventscape creates landmarks that are powerful and memorable. They’re known globally as a designer and manufacturer of top quality, custom framed structures clad in any material. Designers use their creations to make landmarks of custom ceilings, columns, walls, and infinite special features—for architectural, retail, hospitality, exhibit, and event applications. Their services include ideation, design, engineering, fabrication, project management, shipping and installation. Since their establishment in 1993, their projects have been installed worldwide, including Canada, the US, the Netherlands, Norway, Korea, France, England, Mexico, Honduras, The Bahamas, Italy, and United Arab Emirates. Their innovative, dynamic team of design and fabrication specialists allows their clients to take their design to a daring new level. Together, they “create what’s next™”.

Have computer and camera, will travel... is my motto.  I have enjoyed traveling Europe to study the ancient architecture and look forward to taking that influence into my profession.  I have a passion for the historic, but embrace the new and wonderful realm of the architectural and design influences of today.  Kermit the Frog once said, "Being GREEN isn't easy",  but is necessary in ensuring our future.
